OBD2 scanner questions

Will an OBD2 scanner work with my car?

If your car is petrol from 1996 or newer (US), 2001+ petrol or 2004+ diesel (EU), it has a standard OBD2 port and any scanner we sell will connect. See the full compatibility guide for details by brand and year.

Can a scanner clear the check engine light?

Yes. Every scanner we stock can read and erase diagnostic trouble codes. Remember: clearing the code does not fix the cause. If the underlying fault is still there, the light comes back. Use our fault-code guides to fix the cause first.

Do I need an app or subscription?

Depends on the tool. Handheld scanners work standalone with no app and no subscription. Bluetooth OBD2 adapters pair with a free or paid phone app. Every product page states exactly what is required. No surprise fees.

What is the difference between a cheap and expensive scanner?

Basic scanners read engine codes (P-codes). Mid-range tools add live data, freeze frame, and readiness monitors. Advanced scanners access ABS, airbag and transmission modules. For most check-engine-light jobs, a basic to mid-range scanner is all you need.
